SCCM 2012 R2 installation + separate SQL 2012 instance – Firewall issue – “Network path was not found”

In this post, I’d like to share with you problems I faced during the System Center Configuration Manager 2012 R2 installation, while using separate SQL server for SCCM database. Basically it was a firewall configuration problem. There are many guides how to install install SCCM 2012 R2, here are example links : Gerry Hampson ConfigMgrSCCM 2012 R2 STEP BY STEP INSTALLATION GUIDE – UPDATE or this one. Everywhere installation goes very smooth. But not in my case …

The configuration I’m using is

  • DS-DC-01.europe.intranet – domain controller, Windows Server 2012 R2
  • SC-CM-01.europe.intranet – Windows Server 2012 R2 and SCCM 2012 R2, to be installed
  • SC-DB-01.europe.intranet – Windows Server 2012 R2 + SQL Server 2012

So I started the installation, it went quite smooth to the point I was providing data of SQL server. I entered all necessary data, pressed next and I saw following error

Of course, firewall issue, I disabled firewall and I was able to move forward. But it’s not the way it should have been done. So I found the ports used between SCCM and SQL server, you can find them on technet, only : 1433 for SQL Server and 4022 – default port for Session Broker. So I created a GPO, with a little wider scope of port and I assigned it to SQL server

And same I faced same error … So I started digging with TCPView for the start, I noticed that my SC-CM-01 tries to connect to SC-DB-01 on 2 additinal ports : 139 and 445, so I prepared firewall rule for this two ports, refreshed the GPO on SQL server and …

Something different, so further investigation showed me that one another port was necessary : 49154 and it was used by WMI service. So I added 49154 port to firewall rule

again refreshed GPO on SQL server. And this time everything worked.

I moved forward and rest of installation went smoothly. It’s sad that this is not properly documented. I hope it will help you with your SCCM installations
